Summary The historical development of vegetable growing is a changeable, but gradational process in Russia. The agro-industrial complex introduces advanced technologies related to crop production, which, according to economic and technical indicators, are suitable for farmers to improve their work. This is what will ensure food security and independence, which will lead consumers to a balanced diet. A huge contribution to the development of theoretical knowledge and fundamentals was made by VIR im. N.I.Vavilova, on their basis, the varietal diversity of vegetable crops was studied, classifications were also developed, and they were also successfully used in practical breeding.
